Bertone: The Rebirth of the Legendary Brand

Last week, Bertone resurfaced with a new car called the GB110 at Monaco’s Top
Marques. The GB110 is the first car designed and manufactured by Bertone since the
Aston Martin Rapide Bertone Jet 2+2, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in
March 2013.

To better understand the significance of the unveiling of the GB110, we must look into
the journey of the Bertone brand. Bertone was founded in 1912 by Giovanni Bertone in
Turin, Italy, initially focusing on building horse-drawn carriages before transitioning to automobile bodies in the early 20th century. Giovanni’s son, Nuccio Bertone, upon taking over the company from his father, led the company to become a revolutionary automotive design firm.

Under Nuccio’s leadership, Bertone designed several iconic cars, including the Lamborghini Miura (1966), Alfa Romeo Montreal (1970), and Lancia Stratos (1973). Beyond these legendary models, the company also created several production models for major car manufacturers, such as the Fiat X1/9, Citroën BX, and the Lamborghini Countach.

However, in the early 2000s, Bertone faced significant financial difficulties, leading to
bankruptcy in 2014. This period marked a halt in the company’s operations and production. The brand has now been revitalized under the leadership of Mauro and Jean-Franck Ricci, who bring more than 30 years of expertise in engineering and automotive innovation.

The GB110 aims to capture the essence of Bertone’s rich history of innovation,
resilience, and an enduring legacy. The car features design cues such as the straight,
clean lines and sharp edges from the Alfa Romeo Bertone Carabo (1968) and the Stratos Zero (1970). These are merged with the wide, rounded design of the Bertone Nivola (1990) and the Bertone Birusa (2003) to truly incorporate the design elements that characterized Bertone throughout its history.

Only 33 units of the GB110 will be produced, each priced from about $2 Million, depending on customization. The car boasts an engine with 1124 hp and 1100 Nm of maximum torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 300 km/h in a mere 12.9 seconds. Clients will have an almost boundless number of interior and exterior trim options, paying homage to legendary cars designed by Bertone such as the Nivola, Carabo, and Birusa. Additionally, Bertone is willing to incorporate personalized changes that clients desire.

The rebirth of Bertone with the GB110 is not just the return of a brand but the revival of a
legacy steeped in automotive history. The GB110 stands as a testament to Bertone’s
resilience and commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and performance. This
new chapter promises to honor the past while driving boldly into the future, ensuring
that the Bertone name continues to shine brightly in the world of luxury automobiles.
